OCHIUL ÎNCHIS

Nu îndrăznesc să-nchid o clipă ochii
de teamă
să nu zdrobesc între pleoape lumea,
să n-o aud sfărîmîndu-se cu zgomot
ca o alună între dinţi.
Cît timp voi mai putea fura din somn ?
Cît timp o voi mai ţine-n viaţă ?
Privesc cu disperare
şi mi-e cîineşte milă
de universul fără apărare
ce va pieri în ochiul meu închis.


THE CLOSED EYE

I don't dare to shut my eyes for a moment
for fear
of crushing between the eyelids the world,
of hearing it breaking with noise
like a nut between the teeth.
How long could I steal from the sleep ?
How long shall I keep it alive ?
I am watching with despair
and I feel pity like a dog
of the universe without defence
that will perish in my closed eye.
