STELELOR

mă-nchin luminii voastre, stelelor,

TO THE STARS

With a sea of impulses and aspirations
inside me,
I bow to your light, stars,
and flames of passion
burn in my eyes, as in offering candles.
Thrills that come from your country, kiss
with cold lips of ice my body
and astonished I ask you :
to what world are you going, and to what abysses ?
Wanderer as I am,
I feel today to be the most lonely soul
and crossed by the enthusiasm I am running, but I don't know where.
Only a thought is my ray and power :
oh, stars, although you have
in your way no target
but, perhaps, that is why you conquer the infinity !

CUVÎNTAREA SCRIBULUI

Toate transportă - unele-n luntri, altele-n cîrcă -
ziua dintîi. Eu sunt Scribul. Şi ştiu : dăinuind
toate se trec. Însă - unde ? doar eu, pe papirus,
aş putea să le-arăt uneori.

Ochiul multiplu leagă toate punctele zării ;

Semnul de-aici e dincolo noimă : Sfinxul o vede.
Nu mă clintiţi din poziţia mea ! Muritori

THE SCRIBE'S ORATION

Everybody carry - some in boat and others on back -
the first day. I am the Scribe. And I know : lasting
all the things pass. But - where ? only me, on papirus
I could show them, sometimes.

The multiple eye links all the points of the horizon ;
the arm grabs nothing. In the funnel end :
the delta crushes them in its throat and, then, spreads
the cataracts of the holy Nile.

I'm sitting still. The stilet in my hand touches the scroll.
Clear forms appear under its gritting :
the hawks with extended miters, the scarabs and the snakes
deeper confirmed, under the sand.

The sign from here is beyound, meaning : The Sphinx sees.
Don't budge me from my position ! Mortals
born from the sex of the parents, but he, Atum-Ptah,
is conceived from his name.

Grains and wines, buried urns provide
to the dead underground dinners. But their names
I, and only I ! conserve them : as mummies of the language
the Pharaohs spend their night on the throne.

ECCE HOMO

ECCE HOMO

What new pains brings me the morning ?
Abysses of torment under my feeble steps...
O, Lord, you let me the life with usury
For each day to ask me interest ?

All you have created here beautiful and great
You pulled from me with tongs of pain.
I look at the woman : Flesh and oblivion,
Sweet urn with ashes of pleasure.

That I have crossed with beasts and angels
And I wake against you with every thought new enemy ?
You are too high, the light from you
Gets old while it comes to us.

But alone my body without redemption
On cross of sins I crucify,
And my soul hungry of immortality
With bitter roots I feed...

FURNICA

THE ANT

In the golden silence of the evening, the man is ploughing...
And the heavy plough, and the oxen, and he himself seems toys
Of wood on the black and green chess of the plains :
Above them a sky of spring are reigning.
In the tippled furrow, which has germinated
So many white unleavened breads - but for other children -
Deeply thrusts the iron, and in gray thoughts
He stops, broken by the millenary toil.

But he hasn't noticed near, smaller companion,
On a blade of grass, bearing her trouble an ant,
As neither she suspected a god in him.
And now, when the night is razing the ant, the man and the horizon,
None of them feel in heaven God
Who is ploughing, blind like them, the starry stretch.

A VENIT UN CLOWN

A intrat un bătrîn în arenă.
Circul - gol.
S-a uitat la trapeze,
la băncile goale,
la alămurile orchestrei.
A lăsat capul în jos.
S-a uitat la nisip.
A-ngenucheat.
L-a strecurat printre degete.
A privit cum grăunţele curg.

A CLOWN HAS COME

An old man got inside the arena.
The circus - empty.
He looked at the trapezes,
at the empty banks,
at the brasses of the orchestra.
Dropped his head.
Looked at the sand.
Knelt down.
Slipped it through his fingers.
Watched the grains flowing.
Here was his place,
in the arena smelling of dung and dogs,
of pomace, of beasts.
Here the nightingale sang for him.
The tent was a starry night of summer.
Here the children were laughing and eating pretzels.
They laughed when he opened large eyes
on a whitewashed face,
when he was sad because he didn't understand
why the tower of chairs, well rised,
crumbles, the ball jumps back
and strikes him in head,
why he is him and you are you,
why he knows everything but understands nothing,
and the kids terribly were amusing.
But that was long ago.

Now he is old.
And life has passed, unnoticed,
while he made figuration there,
in the Great Thearte.
