AMIAZA
Ziua are trupul despicat în două,
Numai jumătate mai e vie,
O lumină fantastică a-nvăluit
Tot ce a fost să fie.
Despre morți numai bine,
Îngîn cu capul pe spate,
În iarba proaspăt cosită,
Dar despre cei morți pe jumătate ?
Nu mai știu ce-aș putea să zic,
E cald, e o zi toridă,
Să se decidă și ei, gîndesc,
E timpul să se decidă.
AFTERNOON
The day has the body split in two,
Only a half is still alive,
A fantastic light has wrapped
All the things that were to be.
Of the dead speak well,
I whisper with my head beck,
In the grass recently mowed,
But of the half dead ?
I do not know what to speak of,
It is hot, it's a scorching day,
Let them decide, I think,
It's time to make up their mind.
ORBUL
Tîrziu, după ce s-a tămăduit,
Orbul a întîlnit iar pe Isus ;
Mi-i făgăduise cuvîntul tău cel mare.
THE BLIND MAN
Late, after he has healed,
The blind man met Jesus again ;
And fiery,grieved and hostile,
He stopped him and blamed.
Lord was listening sad and obedient :
" When you gave my eyes,
Why did you not show your entire power ?
Why did you spat down in the garbage
And soiled my eyelids with mud ?
What's good to see and then,
As I had seen before,
With the same eyes, like those of a dog,
The same pain, the same graves,
And the same game of shadows and ghosts ?
Instead of dipping it in mud,
Why did you not soaked it in light,
And touched me on my eyes ?
It was enough only one ray
From the true light to fall,
And my flesh eye to break,
To flower the eternal eyes which
Had promised your great word.
Then I had told you had fulfiled a miracle,
Instead of cursing and bleeding,
To see the world with angel eyes,
And see everything heavenly good.
It was better in the obscurity :
It was darkness but it was depth.
The blindness had stirred a light inside me
And I was fumbled into the inward abyss, full
Of premonitions and light visions,
As you sense the flowers after their scents.
As soon as you have opened my eyes of earth
I saw things, but I could see no light.
What was the use of giving me my eyes,
I was not waiting for the sight, but for the salvation ".
CERC
De ce să te bucuri ?
Şi cum să te bucuri ?
Şi cînd să te bucuri ?
Şi cît să te bucuri ?
Dar ce să mă mire ?
Şi cum să mă mire ?
Şi cît să mă mire ?
Şi cînd să mă mire ?
Străin printre lucruri
Păgîn printre lucruri
Sărac printre lucruri
Şi orb printre lucruri
Străin în iubire
Păgîn în iubire
Sărac în iubire
Şi orb în iubire

Why to be happy ?

And when to be happy ?
And how much to be happy ?
But why shall I wonder ?
And how shall I wonder ?
And how much shall I wonder ?
And when shall I wonder ?

CASA
Oamenii la noi
Primăvara
Scot din malul Prutului
Lut pentru casă :
Îi scot pe străbunii noştri
Prefăcuţi în lut.
Pe urmă,
Frămîntă, dureros, lutul
Pînă cînd
Le sîngeră picioarele.
Apoi
Femeile pictează pe horn
Cocoşi şi flori stilizate,
Bărbaţii sparg podul
Să treacă lumina electrică,
Bătrînii se încălzesc
Cu spatele la sobă,
Copiii zgîrie obrazul pereţilor
Şi fac pipi pe faţa casei.
Iar lutul
Scade tot mai mult,
Şi gropile acele, pe sub pămînt,
Înaintează tot mai mult
Către sat.
Şi vine o primăvară
Cînd lumea se aude săpînd
Chiar sub casa ta.
Atunci copiii tăi
Scot din casa cea mare covorul
Şi se mută la margine de sat
Unde-şi fac o
Casă nouă.
THE HOUSE
People of our sides
In the spring
Take out from the bank of the Prut
Clay for building a house :
They take out our ancestors
Turned into clay.
Then
They temper, painfully, the clay
Until
Their feet bleed.
Then
Women paint on the chimney
Stylized fowls and flowers,
Men break the attic
To set up electric light,
Old are heating
With their back against the stove,
Children scratch the walls
And pee on front of the house.
And the clay
Lower more and more
And those holes, under the earth,
Advance more and more
Toward the village.
And one spring comes
When people is heard digging
Just under your house.
Then your children
Take out from the big house the carpet
And move to the edge of the village
Where they make a
New house.
FABULĂ
" Vă voi ridica la rangul de copac,
spus-a Dumnezeu ierburilor blajine,
iată, în primăvara care vine,
creşterii voastre nu voi mai pune capac. "
" Să nu credeţi în el, e un făgăduitor,
zise titirezul care se-nvîrtea la rădăcina lor.
Mie mi-a promis că o să mă facă om,
cu ciuboţele, o comoară de om. "
Dar un grec, un esop, auzindu-l grăi :
" Dacă Dumnezeu şi-ar împlini cuvîntul, ce-ar mai fi ?
Fapta lui pentru ambiţioşi e tăgadă
şi spusa e ademenire, e încercare, e nadă.
FABLE
" I shall raise you at the status of a tree,
God said to the gentle herbs,
here, the spring which is coming now
I shall not put the lid to your growth. "
" Don't believe him, he's a promiser,
said the top which was spinning at their root.
He promised me that he'll make me human,
with little shoes, a treasure. "
But a Greek, an Esop, hearing him spoke :
" If God would keep his word, what would it be ?
For his acting is a denial for the ambitious
and his saying is an enticement, is a test, a bait. "
