ŞI DACĂ...

Şi dacă ramuri bat în geam
Si se cutremur plopii,
E ca în minte să te am
Şi-ncet să te apropii.

Şi dacă stele bat în lac
Adîncu-i luminîndu-l,
E ca durerea mea s-o-mpac
Înseninîndu-mi gîndul.

Şi dacă norii deşi se duc
De iese-n luciu luna,
E ca aminte să-mi aduc
De tine-ntotdeauna.

AND IF...

And if the branches knock at my window
And the poplars are trembling
It's to have you in my mind
And get you closer slowly.

And if the stars are reflecting in the lake
Enlightening its bottom,
It's to quiet my pain down
Clearing my thought out.

And if the thick clouds go away
And the moon is shinning
It's for remembering you
This moment and forever.

STELELOR

mă-nchin luminii voastre, stelelor,

TO THE STARS

With a sea of impulses and aspirations
inside me,
I bow to your light, stars,
and flames of passion
burn in my eyes, as in offering candles.
Thrills that come from your country, kiss
with cold lips of ice my body
and astonished I ask you :
to what world are you going, and to what abysses ?
Wanderer as I am,
I feel today to be the most lonely soul
and crossed by the enthusiasm I am running, but I don't know where.
Only a thought is my ray and power :
oh, stars, although you have
in your way no target
but, perhaps, that is why you conquer the infinity !

CUVÎNTAREA SCRIBULUI

Toate transportă - unele-n luntri, altele-n cîrcă -
ziua dintîi. Eu sunt Scribul. Şi ştiu : dăinuind
toate se trec. Însă - unde ? doar eu, pe papirus,
aş putea să le-arăt uneori.

Ochiul multiplu leagă toate punctele zării ;

Semnul de-aici e dincolo noimă : Sfinxul o vede.
Nu mă clintiţi din poziţia mea ! Muritori

THE SCRIBE'S ORATION

Everybody carry - some in boat and others on back -
the first day. I am the Scribe. And I know : lasting
all the things pass. But - where ? only me, on papirus
I could show them, sometimes.

The multiple eye links all the points of the horizon ;
the arm grabs nothing. In the funnel end :
the delta crushes them in its throat and, then, spreads
the cataracts of the holy Nile.

I'm sitting still. The stilet in my hand touches the scroll.
Clear forms appear under its gritting :
the hawks with extended miters, the scarabs and the snakes
deeper confirmed, under the sand.

The sign from here is beyound, meaning : The Sphinx sees.
Don't budge me from my position ! Mortals
born from the sex of the parents, but he, Atum-Ptah,
is conceived from his name.

Grains and wines, buried urns provide
to the dead underground dinners. But their names
I, and only I ! conserve them : as mummies of the language
the Pharaohs spend their night on the throne.

ECCE HOMO

ECCE HOMO

What new pains brings me the morning ?
Abysses of torment under my feeble steps...
O, Lord, you let me the life with usury
For each day to ask me interest ?

All you have created here beautiful and great
You pulled from me with tongs of pain.
I look at the woman : Flesh and oblivion,
Sweet urn with ashes of pleasure.

That I have crossed with beasts and angels
And I wake against you with every thought new enemy ?
You are too high, the light from you
Gets old while it comes to us.

But alone my body without redemption
On cross of sins I crucify,
And my soul hungry of immortality
With bitter roots I feed...

FURNICA

THE ANT

In the golden silence of the evening, the man is ploughing...
And the heavy plough, and the oxen, and he himself seems toys
Of wood on the black and green chess of the plains :
Above them a sky of spring are reigning.
In the tippled furrow, which has germinated
So many white unleavened breads - but for other children -
Deeply thrusts the iron, and in gray thoughts
He stops, broken by the millenary toil.

But he hasn't noticed near, smaller companion,
On a blade of grass, bearing her trouble an ant,
As neither she suspected a god in him.
And now, when the night is razing the ant, the man and the horizon,
None of them feel in heaven God
Who is ploughing, blind like them, the starry stretch.

A VENIT UN CLOWN

A intrat un bătrîn în arenă.
Circul - gol.
S-a uitat la trapeze,
la băncile goale,
la alămurile orchestrei.
A lăsat capul în jos.
S-a uitat la nisip.
A-ngenucheat.
L-a strecurat printre degete.
A privit cum grăunţele curg.

A CLOWN HAS COME

An old man got inside the arena.
The circus - empty.
He looked at the trapezes,
at the empty banks,
at the brasses of the orchestra.
Dropped his head.
Looked at the sand.
Knelt down.
Slipped it through his fingers.
Watched the grains flowing.
Here was his place,
in the arena smelling of dung and dogs,
of pomace, of beasts.
Here the nightingale sang for him.
The tent was a starry night of summer.
Here the children were laughing and eating pretzels.
They laughed when he opened large eyes
on a whitewashed face,
when he was sad because he didn't understand
why the tower of chairs, well rised,
crumbles, the ball jumps back
and strikes him in head,
why he is him and you are you,
why he knows everything but understands nothing,
and the kids terribly were amusing.
But that was long ago.

Now he is old.
And life has passed, unnoticed,
while he made figuration there,
in the Great Thearte.

LANSARE

Azi o pînză de nor,
Mîine catargul unui drum,
Mi-am construit singur o corabie.

Cînd a fost gata am luat-o în spate
Şi-am început să-i caut o apă
Pe seama ei.

Am mers aşa pînă cînd un pescăruş
I-a murit de provă,
Ca o sticlă de şampanie.

Atunci am intrat în mare
Pînă la glezne, pînă la brîu,
Tot mai greu mă apăsa dorul ei
De valuri.

Cînd nu m-am mai văzut de loc,
Corabia a început deodată
Să meargă singură.

O, chiar dacă mă adîncesc
Cu fiecare pas,
Şi acum tot eu o duc,
Mergînd pe fundul mării, tăcut,
Cu amîndouă mîinile ridicate
Deasupra capului.

LAUNCH

Today the cloth of a cloud,
Tomorrow the mast of a road,
I built by myself a ship.

When it was finished I took it back
And I began to look for a water
Worthy of it.

I walked until a seagull
Died to the bow,
Like a bottle of champagne.

Then I got into the sea
Up to my ankles, up to my waist,
More and more heavy pressed me its yearning
Of waves.

When I wasn't seen anymore,
The ship suddenly started
To go alone.

Oh, even though I am deeping
With each step,
And now I carry it myself
Walking on the bottom of the sea, in silence,
With both hands raised
Overhead.

SPECTACOL

Elita luase loc la parter
şi proştii sus, aproape de cer.
În lojă stătea o întîmplare cam abătută
şi un năprasnic destin în mare ţinută.
Un dezastru tare cît zece
tot spera că totul va trece.
Un naufragiu dormita în fotoliu
înfăşurat în linţoliu.
O răceală
vagabonda prin sală.
O inocenţă
strălucea printr-o totală absenţă.
Piesa era o răfuială
între virtute şi greşeală.
Scena era un sanctuar
prin care adevărul trecea foarte rar.
Actorii îşi îndrugau rolul,
dar, încet, îi înghiţea nămolul ;
în pauze, tăcute aplauze,
la finale,tăcute urale.
Şi cînd căzu cortina
toţi se-ntrebau cine poartă vina
şi cine-i autorul
care-a înfăptuit omorul,
în cinci acte, cu sete,
ca o crimă pe-ndelete.
Atunci apăru la rampă Ariel
cu jerbe de flăcări şi anemone
pentru mult prea onorabilii " dramatis personae ".
Şi această ficţiune, în tuş, în cărbune,
şi spectacolul amuzant
au dispărut în neant.

SHOW

The elite took place at the pit
and fools up, closer to heaven.
In a lodge stood an event rather sad
and a terrible destiny in full dress.
A disaster as powerful as ten
hoped that everything would pass.
A shipreck was snoozing in an armchair
wrapped in the shroud.
A coolness
was roving around the room.
An innocence
was shining by a total absence.
The play was a settling accounts
between virtue and error.
The scene was a sanctuary
where the truth was rarely passing.
The actors mumbled their parts,
but, slowly, were swollowed by the mud ;
during the intervals, silent applauses,
at the end, silent cheers.
And when the curtain fell
they all wondered who to blame
and who's the author
who carried out the murder,
in five acts, with thirst,
like a deliberate crime.
Then appeared at the ramp Ariel
with sheafs of flames and anemons
for the honorable " dramatis personae ".
And this fiction, in ink, in charcoal,
and the funny show
disappeared in the void.

A SAINT

A tree, if you cut him an arm,
He grows another one from a new bud,
And if you cut a root,
Another root will stretch instead it,
And if you knot his branches
They will continue to blossom knotted,
And if you take his fruits,
He will make others that will offer you...
A tree is a saint,
Who can not be humiliated
Because humilty is contained
In the concept of holiness.
And a fighter,
Who can not be defeated
Because defeat is contained
In the concept of struggle.
As the seed is contained in the tree
And the tree in the eternity.

VIS VEGETAL

Aş vrea să fiu copac şi-aş vrea să cresc
lîngă fereastra ta, te-aş auzi
şi-n voie te-aş privi întreaga zi.
M-aş apuca şi iarna să-nfloresc,
ca să te bucuri. Păsările cele
mai mîndre-ar face cuib pe creanga mea,
şi nopţile mi-ar da cercei de stele,
pe care, ca pe frunze, ţi le-aş da.
Prin geamul larg deschis, de-atîtea ori
m-aş apleca uşoară, să-ţi sărut
cînd părul ce pe frunte ţi-a căzut,
cînd buzele, cu buze moi de flori.
Spre toamnă m-aş juca, zvîrlindu-ţi mere
şi foi de aur roşu prin odaie,
cu-a ramurilor tînără putere
ţi-aş apăra obloanele de ploaie.
Şi, cine ştie, poate că într-o seară
de primăvară, cînd va fi şi lună,
va trece prin grădină-o zînă bună
făcîndu-mă femeie să fiu iară.
Atuncea, sprijinindu-mi de pervaz
genunchiul ud de frunze şi pămînt,
cu părul încă doldora de vînt,
cu rouă şi cu lună pe obraz,
eu ţi-aş sări în casă, şi senină
( uitînd de-atîta vreme să vorbesc ),
cu cîte-un cuib în fiecare mînă
întinsă, aş începe să zîmbesc.

VEGETAL DREAM

I wish to be a tree and grow
near your window, I should hear you
and freely I should watch you all day long.
I should begin to bloom in winter
to please you. The most beautiful
birds would make their nest in my branches,
and the nights would give me earrings of stars,
witch, as leaves, I should offer you.
Through the wide opened window, so ofen
I should lean lightly, to kiss
your hair fallen on your forehead
or your lips, with soft lips of flowers.
In the autumn I should play, throwing apples
and red gold leaves into your room,
with the young power of the branches
I should defend your shutters from the rain.
And, who knows, maybe one evening
of spring, when the moon will rise,
through the garden a good fairy will pass
making me a woman again.
Then, leaning on the windowsill
my knees wet from leaves and earth,
with my hair still overflown with wind,
with dew and moonlight on my cheeks,
I'd jump in your house, and serene
( forgetting for so long to speak ),
with a nest in each stretched hand
I should start to smile.

O CĂLĂRIRE ÎN ZORI

Lui Eminescu tînăr

Tăcerea se izbeşte de trunchiuri, se-ncrucişe,
se face depărtare, se face nisip.
Mi-am întors către soare unicul chip,
umerii mei smulg din goană frunzişe.
Cîmpul tăindu-l pe două potcoave
calul meu saltă din lut, fumegînd.
Ave, mă-ntorc către tine, eu. Ave !
Soarele a izbucnit peste lume strigînd.

Tobe de piatră bat, soarele creşte,
tăria cu acvile din faţa lui
se prăbuşeşte în trepte de aer, sticleşte.
Tăcerea se face vînt albăstrui,
pintenul umbrei mi-l creşte
în coastele cîmpului.

Soarele rupe orizontul în două.
Tăria îşi năruie sfîrşitele-i carcere.
Suliţe-albastre, fără întoarcere,
privirile mi le-azvîrl, pe-amîndouă,
să-l întîmpine fericite şi grave.
Calul meu saltă pe două potcoave.
Ave, maree-a luminilor, ave !

Soarele saltă din lucruri, strigînd
clatină muchiile surde şi grave.
Sufletul meu îl întîmpină, ave !
Calul meu saltă pe două potcoave.
Coama mea blondă arde în vînt.

A RIDING AT DAWN

To young Eminescu

The silence is striking against the stumps, is crossing,
becomes distance, becomes sand.
I turned to the sun my unique face,
my shoulders in running tears out  the leafage.
Cutting the field, on two horseshoes,
my horse is bouncing from the ground, steaming.
Ave, I turn to you, I. Ave !
The sun has burst over the world shouting.

Drums of stone are beating, the sun is growing,
the sky with eagles in front of him
is breaking down in steps of air, shinning.
The silence becomes blue wind,
the spur of the shadow is growing
in the flanks of the field.

The sun is breaking the horizon in two.
The sky is breaking down its finished prisons.
Blue spears, without returning,
I throw my eyes, both,
happy and solemn to meet him.
My horse is bouncing on two horseshoes.
Ave, tides of lights, ave !

The sun is bouncing from the things, shouting,
is moving the deaf and solemn edges.
My soul greets him, ave !
My horse is bouncing on two horseshoes.
My blond mane are burning in the wind.

SONET

Cînd însuşi glasul gîndurilor tace
Mă-ngînă cîntul unei dulci evlavii -
Atunci te chem ; cîntarea-mi asculta-vei ?
Din neguri reci plutind te vei desface ?
Puterea nopţii blînd însenina-vei
Cu ochii mari şi purtători de pace ?
Răsai din umbra vremilor încoace,
Ca să te văd venind - ca-n vis, aşa vii !
Cobori încet...aproape, mai aproape,
Te pleacă iar zîmbind peste-a mea faţă,
A ta iubire c-un suspin arat-o.
Cu geana ta m-atinge peste pleoapă,
Să simt fiorii strîngerii în braţă,
Pe veci pierduto, veşnic adorato!

SONNET

When the voice of the thought is silent,
The song of a sweet piety follows me -
Then I call you - will you listen to my song ?
From the cold darkness floating will you detach ?
The midnight gently will you make clear
With your large eyes full of peace ?
Rise from the shadows of the time now
To see you coming - as in a dream you're coming!
Slowly descend - closer, and closer,
Bend smiling over my face,
Show your love with a sigh.
With your lashes touch my eyelids,
To feel the thrills of your embrace,
Forever lost, forever adored !

NIMENI

a destinului :
nimeni nu ştie care e drumul bun.

NOBODY

nobody knows which is the good way
nobody remembers the burden of loneliness
in the delicate mazes of the dream
nobody learns to syllabize the sadness of being anymore
this tender nightmare from which we shall wake up one day
dying.
nobody affords the luxury of melancholy anymore
in the narrow shady bad smelling streets
nobody avails himslf of the opportunity of  not getting birth
in this tiresome light overwhelmingly unreal
nobody stays under the wounded eyelid of the sky anymore
în the wavy sleep of the grass.
nobody remember now of the ringed enigmatical flesh
of the destiny :
nobody knows which is the good way.

ÎNCERCARE

Mi-am croit visuri
Aripi de vultur,
Am zburat cu ele
Dar m-am izbit de înalt,
Am zburat cu ele
Dar m-am prăvălit în găurile timpului.
Cînd am vrut să mă ridic
Cerul era sus şi de neatins,
Iar eu eram acoperită de timp.
Golurile se umpluseră cu mine.

ATTEMPT

I cut out dreams
Eagle wings,
I have flown with them
But I have struck myself against the high sky,
I have flown with them
But I have fallen down into the holes of the time.
When I wanted to rise
The sky was up and untouchable,
And I was covered by the time.
The voids were filled with me.

NOR I WASH MYSELF OF THE MANY LOVES

Nor I wash myself of the many loves,
I am hard to make a guilt of love,
Or bad impulse of my poor nature,
When I see the dew burning upon the roses
And fearfully I belive in That who will come.

Nor I wash myself of the many loves,
Contained in my life, too little,
When I can build with their sacrifices
A garden of irises, of lillies, of costmaries.

Those barren and evil have not the mood of understanding,
I, a sinner being from beginning,
I have offered myself the entire view
And the most honestly, maybe, I feared
That if in my flesh the moment is not fruitful
Nor the eternity will find room in my soul.

POEM

Tristeţea mea ciudată te va ochi şi-n nori ;

POEM

You will still stay inside me after you will go,
As impenetrable and luring as you were,
A strange island with roads and paths
Which drive nowhere my humble walk.

You will still stay inside me when you will try
To enter and to lose yourself into the forest.
You see ! Your footstep is carved in my dream
And I can, when I like, to follow it.

And I should find you even if you would't,
And I should find you no matter where you'd roll up.
My dream is like a royal shoe
That suits only to your slender foot.

You will still stay inside me,  when you will fly
From my black heart, as a canary from a cage.
My strange sadness will aim you even in the clouds;
My sadness is aiming better than a rifle.

And I shall see you no matter how many suits you'd change,
No matter how many mask you would put .
My dream among  thousands would make you out,
My sadness among thousands would recognize you.

NOAPTEA PE ŢĂRM

Noaptea, vin singur pe ţărm să m-ascult ;
Noaptea, cînd totul se retrage în umbră
Şi însăşi marea e un nesfîrşit întuneric
Din care vin elementele ca-ntr-o altă geneză.
Îmi spun : aceasta e o jertfă zadarnică,
Un spectacol bizar, o risipă de forţe,
Dar totul sună epuizant de frumos
Şi din vrajba sonoră va rezulta împăcarea.
Prea multe zboruri lasă marea pe ţărm,
Prea multe gînduri irosesc căutîndu-te.
O, dacă te-aş lovi de-a pururi cu visul,
Te-aş preface-n nisip - de aceea rămîn
Atît de departe, atît de statornic tăcut.

ON THE SHORE AT NIGHT

At night, I come alone on the shore for listening to myself ;
At night, when everything is withdrawing in the shadow
And the sea itself is an unending darkness
From which the elements are coming as in another genesis.
I tell myself : this is a vain sacrifice,
A strange performance, a squandering of powers,
But everything sounds consumtively beautiful
And from the sonorous enmity the quietness will arise.
Too many flights the sea leaves on the shore,
Too many thoughts I waste seeking for you.
Oh, if I should strike you with my dream forever,
I shall turn you into sand - that is why I stay
So far, so steadfastly silent.
